One component nanocomposites (OCNC)

Applications of functional polymer-based materials in nanotechnology employ chemical tuning of different components, in order to achieve reliable processing. In particular, conventional nanocomposites consist of nanoparticles (filler) and polymer matrix mixed together at different environmental and chemical conditions. The main complexity, especially at relatively high volume filler concentrations, is related to the homogeneous and controlled distribution of the nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. Recently, polymer hybrids such as the novel one component nanocomposites (OCNC) have drawn much attention both in basic as well as in application-oriented research. OCNC consist of nanoparticles that are grafted with polymer chains without any matrix chains. We aim at the precise creation of materials with well-defined grafting density, chain length, and functionalization. These OCNCs exhibit novel morphologies, dielectric, and mechanical properties, overcome the dispersion challenge, and are expected to display structure-related emergent properties that distinguish them from the more established field of nanocomposite. The structure of OCNC and polymer chain dynamics are studied by SAS techniques and neutron spin-echo spectroscopy (NSE).
