Expertise

JCNS-1 and IBI-8 have expertise in the areas of

• neutron methods, with the operation of neutron small-angle scattering (SANS), neutron reflectometry (NR),
  neutron back scattering (BS), neutron spin echo (NSE), and neutron protein crystallography instruments at the JCNS
  Garching outstation,
• complementary methods, including advanced X-ray (SAXS, XRD) and light scattering (SLS, DLS, SALS),
  electron (TEM, SEM) and light microscopy (CLSM, STED) as well as spectroscopic, mechanical/rheological and
  thermal characterization methods,
• sample environments and multi-detection methods, where scattering experiments can be
  performed under shear, tensile force, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field, electric field, temperature, humidity,
  microfluidic flow, membrane permeation or chemical reaction.

Neutron methods

We design, build and neutron instruments at FRM II in Garching, SNS in Oak Ridge, and ILL Grenoble.

We extend high resolution neutron methods with state-of-the-art complementary methods to cover length and time scales from the microscopic to the macroscopic level

Helmholtz Nanoelectronic Facility (HNF)

The Helmholtz Nanoelectronic Facility (HNF) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich is a state of the art clean room facility with 1000 m2 clean room space DIN ISO 1-3 and forms the central technological platform for nanoelectronics with an emphasis on “green microchips/computing”, quantum- and neuromorphic computing, bioelectronics and microfluidics in the Helmholtz Association.

IHRS Biosoft

The International Helmholtz Research School of Biophysics and Soft Matter (IHRS BioSoft) offers excellent research opportunities for students working on their doctoral thesis.

Teaching and Events

JCNS is regularly involved in several different schools and courses for young scientists such as the Helmholtz Research School, Jülich Soft Matter Days, the Neutron Lab Course, and the IFF Spring School.
