From March to September, Forschungszentrum Jülich is organizing the Jülich Summer Academy entitled “Future Computing Technologies: Hardware, Software, and Algorithms for Scalable Simulation and Data Science”. As part of the academy, numerous interesting workshops, lectures, summer schools, and other events will be offered to early-career scientists, including university students, doctoral researchers, postdocs, and anyone else interested. The events will cover topics such as quantum computing, neuromorphic computing, big data, and more. In 2024, the Jülich Summer Academy will focus on the subject of neuromorphic computing. The inner workings of the brain are taken as a model for innovative computer architectures.

„This technology is a real key innovation.“

PROF. DR. ASTRID LAMBRECHT

“This technology is a real key innovation. Neuromorphic computing is an interdisciplinary research field par excellence that could not thrive without the networking of neuroscience, physics, electronics, computer science, and materials science as practised here at Forschungszentrum Jülich and in collaboration with our partners,” says Prof. Astrid Lambrecht, Chair of the Board of Directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich. “Potential applications range, for example, from intelligent implants in medicine and pattern recognition in smartphones and other mobile devices to the use of AI in industry, in the agricultural sector, and for autonomous driving.”

The Jülich Summer Academy will also provide insights into other topics of future computing technologies. Forschungszentrum Jülich is a hotspot for quantum computing in Europe and combines basic research, theory, and development. It is also a driver of innovation in the field of high-performance computing and is currently building the first European exascale supercomputer, JUPITER. Many research groups use the existing supercomputers for modeling and simulation, for example in climate research. Deep learning methods are also being harnessed for scientific tasks, for example in neuroscience. Applications with big data and AI also require a new way of collecting, organizing, and sharing research data.
