Volunteers wanted for research into Parkinson's syndrome and essential tremor

Study Title:

Identification of structural, functional and metabolic brain changes in idiopathic parkinsonian syndrome and essential tremor in ultra high field MRI.

We are looking for right-handed healthy volunteers and patients with idiopathic Parkinson's syndrome or essential tremor aged 18 and over.

The content of the study is an examination of the brain structure and brain function as well as the brain metabolism in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's syndrome and essential tremor using ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging (UHFMRT). The study is being carried out in cooperation between the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen and the Institute for Physics of Medical Imaging (INM-4) at the Research Center in Jülich. The UHFMRT works without radioactive radiation. There are no known side effects.

Overall, the study should contribute to a better understanding of the causes of idiopathic Parkinson's syndrome and essential tremor and lead to an improvement in the therapy and care of affected patients in the long term.

Participants receive an expense allowance of 50 euros for taking part in the study. The investigations take place in one day at the research center in Jülich.

Procedure of the investigations:

  • Clinical examination (duration: approx. 30 minutes)
  • Carrying out the MRI examination (duration: 60 minutes each)

Background:

Idiopathic parkinsonian syndrome (PD) and essential tremor (ET) are the most common movement disorders we know of.

The main symptom of essential tremor is trembling of the hands. In addition to muscle stiffness and general lack of mobility, this symptom also occurs very frequently in idiopathic Parkinson's syndrome. The structural, functional and metabolic changes in the brain of those affected that cause the symptoms are not fully understood in both diseases. It is also unclear whether the tremors in both diseases may be due to similar functional changes in the brain.

We would be very pleased to be able to win you over for this study!
