Accelerators

COSY, HESR & Co.

The IKP runs existing and designs future accelerators

COSY

The COoler SYnchrtron COSY at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at Reserach Center Jülich provides polarized and unpolarized proton beams in the energy range between 45 and 2700 MeV for basics science experiments. Alternatively, it can provide deuteron beams between 90 and 2100 MeV. The particle beam can be cooled if required to improve beam quality.

HESR

The IKP developes and builds the High Energy Storage Ring (HESR) for the accelerator facility FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, which is supposed to provide Antiprotons in an energy range between 0.83 GeV and 14 GeV for internal experiments.

JULIC

JUelich Light Ion Cyclotron

JULIC comprises all components between ion source and injection into COSY, which are needed to provide polarized or unpolarized protons or deuterons.

JULIC operated as injector for COSY primarily. Irradiations with the direct cyclotron beam or radio nuclide productions (in specific cases) are also possible.

Generally a cyclotron can provide particles in an energy range. For protons the maximum energy at JULIC is 45 MeV, for deuterons it is 90 MeV. When used as injector for COSY, JULIC is operated at fixed energy (45 / 90 MeV depending on the particle). Maximum currents are in the order of 0.1 mA. If not used as injector for COSY, JULIC can be used for irradiations with protons or deuterons. Fields of usage range from radio nuclide production for materials reasearch to questions like "Do these electronic circuits withstand the irradiation fields in space?"

ARD

Accelerator Research and Development

The IKP-4 performs research on mainly 3 topics within the framework of the Helmholtz-Group program ARD: Electron Cooling, Defelctor Development for Storage Rings that can be used to test the electric dipole moment of ligth hadrons and finally new ion sources for hadron accelerators.
