First Place with Polarization Microscopy

Jülich, 22 December 2021 – Prof. Markus Axer and his team from Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine took home first place at the Helmholtz Imaging Platform’s (HIP) Best Scientific Image Contest 2021. The winning entry was an image taken of the cerebellum of a monkey using 3D polarized light imaging technology (3D-PLI), which was developed at INM-1. Polarization microscopy can be used to depict and investigate the processes and architecture of nerve fibres in post mortem brains in three-dimensional resolution. The team received € 1,000 in prize money. A total of 114 entries were submitted.
