GrowScreenAgar 2

Plant cultivation in agar-filled plates

The installation GrowScreen-Agar 2 allows simultaneous and non-invasive phenotyping of root and shoot growth and architecture of Arabidopsis plants and young seedlings of different crop species grown in agar-filled plates (20x10 cm).

GrowScreenAgar 2

The custom-made plates allow the shoot to grow outside of the plate, while the roots grow inside the agar gel. The plates are stored in opaque trays which enable a root development in the dark. Only for imaging, the plates are positioned in an imaging station which takes one image of the whole root system (infrared light), one side-view and one top-view image of the shoot. Root traits which can be quantified are for example root lengths of different root classes as well as the spatial distribution of roots within the agar gel. In addition, shoot traits such as projected leaf area can be analysed. The complete system is located in a climate chamber and gives the opportunity e.g. to discover the genetic control of root and shoot traits in relation to different environmental conditions.
