HiRSE_PS: Preparatory Study for the Helmholtz Platform for Research Software Engineering
January 2022 to December 2024

Research Software Engineering is forming as a new subject of investigation in Europe, Germany, and the Helmholtz Association. In this context, the concept behind the Helmholtz Platform for Research Software Engineering (HiRSE) sees the establishment of central activities in RSE and the targeted, sustainable funding of strategically important software by Community Software Infrastructure (CSI) groups as mutually supportive aspects of a single entity within the Helmholtz research field Helmholtz Information.

Software development is an essential, integral part of research activity. Research software increasingly supports the acquisition, processing and analysis of empirical data, but also the modeling and the simulation of complex processes. Researchers, scientists and others developing software in and for research within the German scientific landscape have come together in the de-RSE community in order to considerably boost the visibility of this topic, and to decisively improve the current recognition of research software engineers. de-RSE aims at constituting a wider initiative for acting jointly on shared objectives, and being the collective spokesperson for RSEs within the German scientific landscape.

Special Interest Group RSE of the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI)

With around 20,000 personal and 250 corporate members, the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI) is the largest and most important professional society for computer science in the German-speaking world and has represented the interests of computer scientists in science, business, public administration, society and politics since 1969. The Special Interest Group RSE is a joint institution of the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI) and de-RSE e.V. (Gesellschaft für Forschungssoftware). The group aims to provide a forum for the interface between software engineering research and the RSE community.
